Surveillance Camera Controversy
Technology brings about controversy, at least in the case of spy cameras. Spy cameras are used for various reasons. Some uses are seen as a violation of people’s rights. People are concerned about where these small cameras may be hidden and for what reason they are being used. Others rely on them for daily protection. The arguments are strong for both the use of spy cameras and from those against their use.
People who advocate the use of spy cameras site a various list of reasons why they are okay. With many news stories about childcare workers abusing children, parents are looking to spy cameras to keep an eye on their caregiver when they are not around. Others use spy cameras to watch over property as a security measure. Some other uses include using them at an entrance gate to be able to see who is there or as a way to monitor children while playing. These people like the idea of being able to use these cameras wherever and whenever they like. They also do not want to have to advise others that they are using them. They feel that would defeat their purpose. People who advocate the use of spy cameras do so because they believe they help to protect their family and home.
Those who are against the use of spy cameras are not necessarily against the people who use them. They are more concerned with how they are being used. The people who use them to protect their home and family are not in the line of fire here. It is people who use these cameras to take pictures of people while they are using the restroom, changing in a dressing room or even just walking down the street. They feel their privacy is being threatened by spy cameras hidden in places that should be private. Dressing room cameras are meant to stop shoplifting, but at the same time are capturing people getting dressed and undressed. Bathroom cameras are meant for the same purpose, but obvious violations occur here. People against spy cameras are only trying to protect their right to privacy.
Spy cameras have been on the market for years. First they were mostly used by law officers and private investigators, but now anyone can buy them. Some uses are strictly for protection while others seem to cross a line. Laws about spy cameras are undefined and it seems it may be an area that needs looking into by lawmakers.
